Hello, my name is Kelly Semple.  I live in Warren, with my husband.  I have worked for the Ohio State Highway Patrol for 29 years, doing various jobs.  I have a Bachelors in Civil Engineering from YSU, never used it.  I have been studying Sign Language for the last two years at Kent Trumbull.  At the end of last until semester I needed to make a decision. I decided Special Education.  I have a true passion for, I believe Special Education (In a roundabout way) is that field.  I have a 45 year old brother, that has Downs and a 17 year old nephew with Autism, my perspective so far has been from the other side of teaching.  I look forward to the challenge, but am very imtimidated by Graduate School.  Hope to see everyone soon!

  1. Hi Kelly! I think we have another class together and I'm also intimidated with Grad school.(2 things we have in common!)I have 3 step children on the spectrum so I have also had the opportunity to see things from the family perspective. I believe that our unique personal experiences will give us both a broader understanding of the challenges that we face in special education today. I'm looking forward to meeting you.

  2. I think it is amazing how you go from being in engineering into education. It took me several tries to figure out what I wanted to do and I realized I should of did this first. Might of saved me 8 years and a couple hundred thousand in student loans.

  3. I hope this new career path leads you down the path that you will truly love. I'm amazed at how you are still pursuing your dream to better help not only your brother, but others as well coming from a non-teaching field.

  4. Hello Kelly,
I think that you have a very unique background that will aid you in succeeding in special education. I have also taken sign language as having my undergrad in speech pathology, and I feel like it is very useful and will help us both when communicating with individuals with special needs. I;m sure we will see each other around campus, but good luck in pursuing your dream!
