Meeting the diverse learning needs for children in special education is extremely difficult. If it wasn’t a hard task then there would not be a need for special educators. This was something learned right away when entering the world of education and I’m almost certain that is why many of us are back in graduate school to get more training. The decision making alone is tough, especially when determining the type of intervention to implement in the classroom. It is important for teachers, administrators, and other school personnel to be knowledgeable about evidence-based approaches to know what these students need to succeed. I really enjoyed learning about evidence based practices through your paper because it is a topic that I was not too familiar with as I entered the program.
One of the biggest issues I’ve had while working in the school and daycare setting with Rich Center students was knowing how to help with their frustrations. Having only been exposed to two school environments for preservice teaching and doing literacy intervention, I was unaware of what interventions were actually being used to support the learning of students with an IEP or 504 plan. It wasn’t until I read this paper, that I realized that these interventions being used must be supported by evidence that is also well researched. I also was unaware of how much research was involved in these practices because of the amount of data that needs collected. The most important information that I will take away from this paper is how you explained that these practices are not guaranteed to work for every student. I also found it helpful to know that evidence based practices are not the only strategies that teachers can use when working with different individuals. It’s almost like having to differentiate the differentiation strategies to the students’ needs.
The information provided in the Powerpoint presentation made this topic a lot easier to understand and gave a great introduction to what a new teacher needs in order to ensure they’re going through the process correctly. The 10 step implementation process chart that was provided is something that will be saved and used in the classroom. In fact, hopefully others choose to read this paper as well so that they can get this information! I enjoyed reading your paper and also plan to use the questions to guide my own learning and understanding of evidence based practices. Some of the larger terms in special education are difficult for me to understand because this is a new area of study. You did an awesome job at breaking it down and getting straight to the point!
